In 1957 (through the efforts of the Randolph Commission, the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council and other civic and business groups), the Illinois legislature established the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission--known later by its shortened name as the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, or NIPC.
